Will's Visit
* I realized I wrote this post then didn't actually post it! So here it is, better late than never. *
I know it's been way too long since we posted, but I've been waiting for a video Will promised to make of our skiing adventure. Alas, he is up for tenure and has had no time for us yet.
Anyway, many of you have been asking if we are snowed in. The answer is yes and no. By Illinois and Florida standards, we would definitely be snowed in. We have about two feet on the ground with another foot expected in the next 24 hours. However, our neighbors to the north have 12 feet of snow, so by New York standards we've got nothing.
We did have some pretty crazy weather on the way to the airport when Will was here. It was clear and sunny here in Fredonia, and clear and sunny in Buffalo, but complete whiteout conditions for about 20 miles in between the two. It took us 3.5 hours to make the usually 1- hour drive, sometimes with traffic coming to a complete stop on the interstate, at which point everyone would get out and chip the ice off our windshields before moving on again. Crazy!
We had a great time with Will here. As soon as he got in, we made a run for the border and spent that first afternoon at Niagara Falls. We had a little blond moment when we stopped to get money from the ATM for the weekend ahead, only to remember we were in another country when the money that came out was not American dollars. We bought some Canadian candy and headache medicine, both of which are better than what you can find here in the states. CANADA ROCKS!
On Friday Susie had to work, so Rach and Will went to Peek-n-Peak alone and took a lesson with Gator and Eric, but Eric, who was about 8, was having none of it, so we spent much of the time waiting for him to fight his way back into his skis after falling. We felt so bad for him and tried to make friends, but he wasn't really interested. Gator felt sorry for us for having to wait around so much that she arranged for us to have a private lesson with her. During our private lesson we got good, and we learned to shred some serious blues. She even took us down the race course a time or two.
Saturday we loaded up and headed back to Peek-n-Peak for a little punk rock skiing. Will and Rach showed Susie our new skills and she picked them up quickly, so we were all on the blue slopes most of the day. We found a great run that hadn't been groomed and still had all the little hills and ridges from the snow makers. Susie got some video of Will and Rach hitting the jumps and getting air. As soon as we get the video, we will post it. Since Rach didn't fall a single time going over the jump she had not filled her butt-busting quota for the day and decided to hit the terrain park on the way back to the car. She's just not happy until she pushes it too far, and when she hit the box and landed hard on the other side, she felt like she could now call it a day. :) Will supposedly got video of that as well.
That night we took Will to his first hockey game and sat in the very front row. We all laughed because every time the players would check into the boards right or a puck would hit the glass in front of us we would all jump out of the way. A good time was had by all, and I think Will is now a major hockey fan.
Our camera is broken, but Will has posted his pictures online so you can see them at http://picasaweb.google.com/rhetboi. Please note that we are only responsible for the one from Peek-n-Peak and Niagara Falls, oh and the ones from Snow Shoe have us in them too, but I have no idea what the other ones are.
